Police were alerted to the scam on Friday, July 26, after the woman attempted to purchase tickets to a concert through an ad on Craigslist.
According to the woman, she made contact with the seller, and in an attempt to verify his identity, the seller provided a picture of someone holding a Washington, D.C. Driver’s license, a picture of that same person with a degree from Duke University, as well as a bank card with the same name on it.
Police said that the woman agreed to purchase two tickets for a total of $300 to the seller - who alleged he was a lawyer and that she could Google him at his firm - through Apple Pay. He also sent a photo of what was a purported receipt for the tickets from Ticketmaster.
Investigators said that after sending the money, the suspect sent her a picture of what was a receipt from Apple Pay, alleging that the transaction didn’t go through, asking her to send more money.
The woman refused to send any more money through different currency exchange platforms, and contact was made with the person whose identity and pictures had been provided of, who was the lawyer identified by the suspect in the Google search.
The lawyer told the woman that his identity had been stolen, contact was made with Ticketmaster who confirmed that the receipt was legitimate, but the buyer had canceled the transaction three hours later.
The incident remains under investigation by police in Darien.
